9 Balls – Sound – Sign – Music
Yeongbin Lee describes herself as a noise collector and considers sound as an audible movement. In 2020, during her scholarship residency at Künstlerhaus Lauenburg, she explored sounds and movements of water, this time she explores audible movements of nine ball sports and shows a visualisation of her sounds in the exhibition “Behind a rainbow”. If you listen carefully to a sound, you can see a movement. This is created by direction and force, and depending on the material properties, different sound colours are created, the artist says.

“When I draw the audible movements, I naturally imagine music, although I can neither read music notes nor play an instrument myself. The visualised sounds bring acoustic inspiration. Through these representations I want to make new experiences possible. There are several sports fields between my flat and my studio. On the way, I heard various ball sport sounds. During the lockdown, I could hear nothing and see nothing. I wanted to feel that pulse again, so I visualised the sounds of nine ball sports.”

In a workshop, Yeongbin Lee will work with deaf and hearing-impaired people to try to find a way to perceive the ball sounds and make music. The artist plans to imitate the nine different ball sounds in various sound experiments, using specially made ball percussion instruments, and to develop signs/translations. Participants can try out ways to create, experience and feel sounds through different movements and vibrations. For example, what does the sound of table tennis look like?

During the finissage, interested visitors will also have the opportunity to try out the various ball percussion instruments.
