Our programme lines

Since its foundation in 1986, the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg, originally a local centre supporting the visual arts and literature, has developed into an important institution in Schleswig-Holstein and has received much recognition, both in German-speaking countries and internationally.

Under the patronage of the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg, two program strands are now being combined. Promising talents in the fields of contemporary visual arts, literature and composition are supported by the renowned fellowship program of the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg. The exhibition program is the responsibility of the affiliated Stadtgalerie Künstlerhaus Lauenburg. Here, an independent program of contemporary art takes place in the joint, shared exhibition spaces of the Künstlerhaus and the Stadtgalerie. Lauenburg’s public areas will also become a recurrent exhibition venue. Exhibitions, readings, concerts and cultural projects that deal with social themes and issues as well as artistic working methods and processes can be held indoors or outdoors.

One of the main goals of the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg is to support contemporary visual artists, authors and composers who take innovative standpoints in their respective fields, through grants, exhibitions and work opportunities. To this end, every year the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg offers four fellowships in the field of visual arts, literature and composition, funded by the state of Schleswig-Holstein. During the rest of the time, it provides facilities for artists to live, work and exhibit. Starting in 2021, an additional “fellowship by invitation” will be awarded by the Künstlerhaus to an artist who already represents Lauenburg in his or her artistic work or whose works are site-specific. This fellowship will culminate with an exhibition in the Stadtgalerie.

Debate between the fellows characterises and defines the Künstlerhaus as a place of artistic production. The direct link between living, production and presentation also has an advantageous and inspiring effect. Through active public relations, the Künstlerhaus is in close contact with relevant galleries, the latest debates over artistic developments, the media and a supra-regional audience interested in art and culture. The combination of the two program strands of the Künstlerhaus – fellowships and exhibitions – has enormous potential and enables knowledge of the Künstlerhaus to spread far and wide. This results in a profile that sustainably promotes exchange and interest in contemporary literature, music and visual arts.

The Künstlerhaus Lauenburg is part of the vital art and cultural scene in the area where four states converge: Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Hamburg metropolitan region. In 2018, it was a founding member of the network of Künstlerhäuser in northern Germany.
