Nicole Schuck

Fellowship on invitation of Künstler:innenhaus 2026

“The Sound of the Elbe – Noisy under water”

We will be reporting more shortly on the planned permanent installation of a hydrophone and a steel sculpture in the River Elbe, featuring a global digital audiovisual link.

Fellowship on invitation 2026 – Nicole Schuck
The artist and former 2009 scholarship holder has been awarded the site-specific fellowship for her project “The Sound of the Elbe – Noisy under water”. Building on the solo exhibition “Drifting and Stuck. Macrozoobenthos of the Elbe” (2023) in Lauenburg, Nicole Schuck will realise the first permanent artistic installation of a hydrophone (underwater microphone) and a floating steel sculpture in the Elbe in 2026, with digital and audiovisual links to the wider world. To this end, she is collaborating with the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg, Prof. Dr. Philipp Fischer from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) / Helmholtz Centre, an IT expert, the Hitzler shipyard and the town of Lauenburg. The work focuses on an artistic and research-based exploration of acoustic pollution in inland waters, bringing this relatively new topic to life in a way that is both poetic and informative, analogue and digital, through a permanent installation in and on the River Elbe in Lauenburg, offering a visual and acoustic experience. A website featuring a specially developed “continuous drawing” translates the underwater sounds of the Elbe into drawn structures in real time, whilst an open-source database (audio, video), a webcam and an information board on the riverbank provide insights and information not only for researchers.

The fellowships on invitation is funded by Ministerium für Allgemeine und Berufliche Bildung, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur des Landes Schleswig-Holstein.
