ANUAL PROJECT Spring/Summer 2026

Resonance experiences between the individual, society and the world

How do we look to the future in uncertain times?

In music and physics, resonance (from the Latin resonare – to echo) is defined as the phenomenon of one body vibrating or sounding in unison with another. In sociology, the term describes a vibrant and profound relationship between people and their environment, a concept developed by Hartmut Rosa. He speaks of a specific relationship between two bodies capable of vibration that enter into a genuine, meaningful interaction. From a psychological perspective, resonance refers to attuning oneself to another person’s feelings in the sense of empathy. These diverse relationships and points of intersection between bodies, between the self and the other, and between humans and the world are explored in the exhibition through various artistic approaches and media.

We all exist within a resonant space, interacting with the world around us and forming resonant relationships with society. But what happens when these relationships are disrupted? When feelings of alienation and uncertainty grow, and we can no longer maintain meaningful communication and social connections with the world and those around us? How does this affect our vision of the future?

Cooperative and interdisciplinary dialogues, or exploring alternative forms of society, can open up opportunities for our (future) coexistence. Artistic perspectives offer the potential to broaden and transform our view of the world, to generate friction and resistance, and to devise ways of arriving at (new) answers and taking active action. But they also create moments of pause, hope and positive visions.

“LUFT 1” (audio piece) – Hanne Römer: Turbulence, animals, ink, sounds – everything is in the AIR, which, as a medium, indiscriminately carries whatever enters it: The art lies in separation: the enigmatic and the bizarre, amplified into a wealth of associations, is guaranteed.

A sensory storytelling and awareness walk with Nicole Schuck along the Elbe and its inhabitants. We immerse ourselves in the world of springtails, amphipods and other tiny and larger creatures. What do we perceive? What do we focus our attention on? What lies hidden in the shadows, in the spaces between? Who are these little creatures and what are they telling us? We look, listen and take the time to connect with these non-human creatures. Meeting point: Artists’ House

We are celebrating 40 years of the Lauenburg Artists’ House and invite you to our Open Day, featuring workshops, guided tours and views of the Elbe.

The piece celebrates the beauty and social significance of the bicycle and explores a variety of themes related to cycling and the symbolic role of the bicycle. There is a particular focus on how the bicycle fosters empowerment – both in the past and today. For curious ears of all ages.

‘Come by the river side – A sound space for the Elbe’
Live improvisations and field recordings by Anja Erdmann invite visitors to immerse themselves in the soundscape of the Elbe and its surroundings.

The exhibition and event programme at the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg in autumn 2025 and 2026 will address the question of how we as a society can deal with uncertainties and challenges, what potential lies therein, and what positive visions for the future might look like. A metaphorical and physical connection is made to water, to the River Elbe, which flows past the Künstler:innenhaus every day and shapes the location. Here, the river serves as a metaphor for continuous change, dynamism and adaptability, but also as a symbol of life, deceleration, connection and networks. Water, as an essential component of ecosystems that are constantly interacting and changing, connects systems on land as well as in and under water. It directly reflects external climatic conditions, such as high or low water levels, temperature, and fast or slow flow movements. These changes in condition are also perceptible on an acoustic level.

So we ask: If we accept uncertainty as a fundamental condition of human life – something to be embraced rather than fought against – if we understand uncertainty as something productive, could it offer an opportunity for readjustment? Artistic approaches, creative thinking, new experiences and constructive practices can help us develop a ‘different’, new relationship with the world around us and positive visions, as well as understand change as a form of opportunity. Hope, community and resilience are important resources in this regard, while deceleration and resonance offer possible solutions for dealing with complexity. Looking at other contexts, such as natural ecosystems or ways of life far removed from Western exploitation logic, can teach us how to deal with uncertainty, change and adaptation. These are harmonious, supportive, fluid relationships and communities.

In an open, fluid exhibition concept, the various thematic references are brought together and simultaneously form the working method of this ongoing project. There are no classic durations with start and end dates, but rather fluid transitions in which the artistic works can respond to one another and build relationships – in terms of content, time and interdisciplinarity. We slow down and focus on resonance and dialogue. The gallery space becomes an artistic resonance chamber, in the sense of a mutual physical experience, a space for conversation, a place of community and positive visions.
The exhibition concept focuses on three main themes that will flow into one another in terms of time and subject matter: spatial-acoustic resonance, social and societal resonance, and ecological and systemic resonance.
